LTD SPOTLIGHT - DJ/SF
1. PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOUR BRAND
DJ / SF is a collaboration between Katelyn Barom (Decor Junction) and Heavenly Villa (Shutter Field). We have been good friends for a long time in SL and I was thrilled when Katelyn asked if I wanted to collaborate on making end-user products. DJ / SF is of course the initials of our individual stores.
We offer original mesh home and garden decor items. We tend to specialize in more rustic styled and outdoor builds We have recently expanded into offering male-male versions of our builds, with a large satellite store at a premier gay sim, Spurt Beach.
2. WHERE DO YOU GET THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR DESIGNS
The inspiration from our designs come from our desire to build things that we like and we think our customers will like. We have gravitated more towards outdoor builds that fit our rustic style as these seem to be quite popular with our customers as there is an abundance of interior home decor already on offer in SL.
We branched into offering adult versions as well as we tend to do bigger pieces of items with animations, rather than smaller decor only pieces. We decided to offer male-male versions after talking with gay friends of Heavenly's as most adult furniture is oriented towards straight couples with only a few stores specializing in gay furniture only.
With a growing knowledge of what our customers like we and what sells well for us, I comb pages and pages of decor and furniture on Pinterest. Pinterest is my bible. I also look at other home and garden decor sites. We have a Pinterest board where I will save pictures of interest, for Katelyn to look at. We discuss what we might like to make for our brand and events, what we like and what we have time to do.
3. OF ALL OF YOUR RELEASES TO DATE, WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE AND WHY?
(Heavenly) I definitely have two favorites. These are my favorites because Katelyn did such a fantastic job of making the mesh and they appeal to my tastes. One is an outdoor swing seat and the other is a very comfy rumpled looking bed.
Katelyn did a great job making the mesh and I spent a lot of time choosing good quality animations for them, especially the beds. I also spent a lot of time on the textures which I love. Its my plan to do more different textured versions of the bed in the near future.
(Katelyn) I have enjoyed making all of our mesh, with no particular favourite. The Hay Wagon may be a favourite as this was a true inspiration from different pictures and just having an idea of what Heavenly suggested - what people might like and being practical for doing animations as well.
4. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST EVER PRODUCT RELEASE?
The Industrial Bar sets was our first collaboration.
5. PLEASE TELL OUR READERS WHATS TO COME FROM YOUR BRAND
We talked briefly at the beginning of the year about what we hope to achieve this year.
We really want to build the exposure of our brand, hence signing with Love To Decorate, as we know is probably the most popular home and garden blog/group in Second Life.
We would like to expand into more events. We currently take part in On9 and Shiny Shabby and have enjoyed these.
For myself (Heavenly) I want to keep learning blender and expand into baked textures on our items.
6. WHERE CAN PEOPLE FOLLOW YOUR WORK?
Our DJ / SF brand is advertised through established Shutter Field inworld group, Flickr page, and Facebook page.
We did create an inworld group prior to the expo last year, but as Shutter Field inworld group was already established we have just worked to build on this.
